What Are the TPD Rules?

TPD, which stands for Tobacco Products Directive, is a directive of the European Union who legislates the sales of all tobacco related products across the EU. These legislations have remained in place in the United Kingdom since departing the EU in January 2020.

So, what are these TPD rules and how do they affect you?

  1. 10ml Bottles of E-Liquid

Any E-Liquid containing nicotine cannot be sold in a bottle that exceeds 10ml.

  1. 2ml Tank Capacity

Tanks which are used for vaping, cannot hold more than 2ml of e-liquid.

  1. Warning Labels

All products whether containing nicotine or not, need to have the correct warning labels. Normally along the lines of ‘this product contains nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance’.

  1. Maximum Nicotine Strength

E-Liquid cannot contain more than 20mg of nicotine per ml.

  1. Child & Tamper Proof Bottles

All bottles of e-liquid must use child and tamper proof caps.

  1. Banned Ingredients & Colourings

E-Liquid must not contain any caffeine, taurine, or colourings. Any colouring must be natural.

  1. MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency)

All products have to be submitted to the MHRA before being sold.
