There are two main types of vaping devices on the market. Choosing the wrong device is a mistake many users make when buying their first vape. It is important to get the right one for your needs & wants.
As mentioned, there are two main types; mouth-to-lung (MTL) and direct-to-lung (DTL) or sometimes referred to as sub-ohm. Let’s try and figure out which one will be right for you!
Firstly, it is important to understand the differences between these two types.
MTL vaping devices produce less vapour and give you a more authentic vaping experience. The way you inhale is very much the same as you would with a cigarette. Gently inhale into your mouth and then take a double inhale down into your lungs before exhaling all of the vapour.
With these devices, you will use much lower settings (if your device is adjustable) and you can use any strength of nicotine you are comfortable with. MTL devices are typically smaller because they do not require large batteries due to the lower wattage output required to heat up the coil.
These devices are best used with 50/50 (thinner) e-liquid like our VAPEcom 10ml e-liquids.
Compared to DTL devices, MTL vaping kits are more popular, especially amongst new users.
DTL or sub-ohm devices are much more powerful and produce large clouds of vapour. The way you inhale is completely different. It is similar to taking a deep breath through your mouth. Inhale on the device, drawing all of the vapour directly into your lungs before exhaling all of the vapour.
Roughly 90% of users only use 3mg (0.3%) of nicotine. This is because of the amount of vapour produced, therefore carrying a lot more nicotine per inhale. The remaining 10% of users will use either 0mg or higher than 3mg.
Sub-ohm devices are best used with 70/30 (thicker) e-liquid like our VAPEcom 100ml Shortfill e-liquids.
If you’re looking for big clouds of vapour with a lot of flavour, then you’ll be heading towards a DTL device.
If you want something more similar to a cigarette in regards to vapour production, then MTL is your best option.
MTL vaping kits are typically smaller. This is because they do not require large batteries since they do not use a lot of power to produce vapour. MTL devices are more comfortable in the hand and pocket.
Typically, DTL vaping devices are a lot bigger and chunkier. This is because they normally have or require more battery life to support the amount of power being used to create those huge clouds of vapour.
You can of course get smaller DTL devices, but you’ll be charging it all the time!
At the moment, nicotine salts are incredibly popular with them being a lot smoother on the throat and providing a quicker nicotine delivery. The vast majority of nicotine salt brands only offer their flavours in a higher nicotine strength. If this is something you’re interested in, then you’ll be better off going with a MTL device.
We would not recommend using higher nicotine strengths in DTL devices as you’ll be taking in far too much nicotine.
MTL vaping devices are normally cheaper and the more favourable option for most users. It is a good place to start your vaping journey. Some may disagree but it really comes down to your needs and wants. Hopefully this information will help guide you in the right direction to choosing the right type of device.
